Getting older isn’t optional. Looking after your skin is.

You still train. You still work hard. You still feel good. But somewhere along the way, the face in the mirror starts looking a little older than the bloke behind it.

Dry patches. Rough texture. Lines that seem more obvious than they used to. If you’re starting skincare in your 40s, you don’t need to become an expert or buy ten different products.

The best skincare routine for men over 40 is one that suits their skin and is easy to repeat: cleanse, moisturise and protect against the sun. Add gentle exfoliation if your skin needs it and tolerates it.

No BS. Just maintenance.

Your morning and evening routine at a glance

  • Morning: Cleanse, apply moisturiser, then apply a separate sunscreen when sun protection is needed.
  • Evening: Cleanse away the day’s build-up and sunscreen, then moisturise.
  • On exfoliation days: Use your exfoliator after cleansing and before moisturising. Follow the product directions and adjust to your skin’s tolerance.

The HARD YARDS system follows RESET, RESURFACE and MAINTAIN. Exfoliation is the occasional step; all three products do not need to be used every time you wash your face. Sunscreen is a separate addition.

Why your skin needs attention after 40

Skin changes gradually with age, and years of sun exposure can become more noticeable. You might notice dryness, a less even-looking complexion or lines that catch your attention in the mirror.

That doesn’t mean you need to chase younger skin at any cost. Start by asking what actually bothers you: does your face feel tight after washing, look rough by the end of the day, or feel uncomfortable after shaving?

Build your routine around those needs. Your age is a useful starting point, but your skin type and how it responds matter more than the number on your birthday cake.

Step 1: RESET — clean your face properly

After work, training or a day outdoors, your face deserves more than a quick splash.

Use a facial cleanser suited to your skin, lukewarm water and your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Avoid hot water and aggressive scrubbing. If washing leaves your skin tight or uncomfortable, reassess the cleanser and how often you use it.

RESET Daily Cleanser is the cleansing step in the HARD YARDS system. Massage onto a wet face and rinse, following the product directions.

Clean face. Fresh start.

Step 2: RESURFACE — tackle rough texture carefully

Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin’s surface. It can help with rough texture, but it isn’t essential for everyone.

If you’re new to it, start cautiously rather than scrubbing daily. Frequency depends on the product and your skin. Use light pressure, avoid the eye area, and skip irritated, broken or sunburnt skin. Follow with moisturiser.

RESURFACE Exfoliator contains bamboo powder and jojoba beads. Use it after RESET and before MAINTAIN on the days you exfoliate.

If your skin becomes red, sore or more flaky, stop and let it settle. Read our exfoliation guide for men for more detail.

Step 3: MAINTAIN — make moisture a daily habit

A moisturiser helps keep water in the skin. That can make dry skin feel more comfortable and soften the appearance of fine lines associated with dryness.

MAINTAIN Daily Moisturiser contains squalane, niacinamide and panthenol, alongside botanicals and peptides. It is the daily moisturising step in the system.

Follow its directions: apply to a clean, dry face morning and night, after RESET and after RESURFACE when you exfoliate.

Sun protection: the extra step Australian men need

Whether you work outdoors, play golf or spend weekends at the beach, sun protection belongs in your routine.

Cancer Council Australia recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF50 or SPF50+ sunscreen when UV levels reach 3 or above. Use clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and shade too.

Apply sunscreen generously according to the label before going outside. Reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying. People working outside or spending long periods outdoors can also need protection when UV is below 3.

MAINTAIN is a moisturiser and does not replace sunscreen. Sunscreen is not included in the HARD YARDS three-product system.

What about ingredients and anti-ageing products?

It’s easy to get lost in ingredient lists. Start with what a product does in your routine: cleanses, exfoliates or moisturises. Then consider whether its complete formula suits you.

MAINTAIN includes squalane, niacinamide and panthenol, but an ingredient list alone cannot tell you exactly how your skin will respond. Nor does the presence of peptides establish that a finished product will remove wrinkles.

You don’t need to add every trending active on day one. Get the basics working first. If persistent pigmentation or wrinkles are your main concern, a dermatologist can discuss targeted options.

How to approach your first 90 days

Treat the first 90 days as a period to build and assess your routine, rather than a countdown to a promised transformation.

  • Start simply: Introduce products gradually so you can identify what agrees with your skin.
  • Make it repeatable: Keep your products where you’ll use them. Attach the routine to an existing habit, such as brushing your teeth.
  • Pay attention: Notice comfort, dryness and texture. More product or more scrubbing isn’t automatically better.
  • Review at 90 days: Compare how your skin looks and feels, and whether the routine is easy to maintain. Photos in similar lighting can help you make a fair comparison.

Hydration and comfort may improve sooner than other concerns. Results vary, and no fixed timeline applies to everyone.

Common questions about skincare for men over 40

Is it too late to start at 40, 50 or 60?

No. You can start taking care of your skin at any age. Focus on a routine that fits your life and addresses your current needs.

What is the best moisturiser for men over 40?

One that suits your skin type, feels comfortable and is easy to use every day. Age alone doesn’t determine the right product. If your skin is sensitive, look for a mild, fragrance-free option.

Can moisturiser make you look younger?

Hydration can make dryness-related lines look less noticeable. Moisturiser does not permanently remove wrinkles or reverse every sign of ageing.

Should men over 40 exfoliate every day?

Daily exfoliation is not a necessary starting point. Some skin doesn’t tolerate it well at all. Follow your product’s directions and your skin’s response; avoid combining several exfoliating products.

Does the HARD YARDS system include SPF?

No. RESET, RESURFACE and MAINTAIN cover cleansing, exfoliation and moisturising. Add a separate sunscreen and other sun protection measures.

Getting older isn’t optional. Doing nothing is.

You maintain your body, your gear and your standards. Your face deserves some attention too.

The HARD YARDS 90-Day Maintenance System brings RESET, RESURFACE and MAINTAIN together so you can build a straightforward routine without piecing one together yourself.

Three products. One simple system. Built for men who don’t want complicated skincare.
